Remembering the May 2010 Nashville Flood (Photos)

As many of you know, the first week of May marked the 3 year anniversary of the 2010 Nashville Flood that raged through our fine city and caused extensive damage to downtown as well as many outlying areas.

I had posted some photos from the aftermath of the storm in the downtown area on my facebook page last week, but wanted to throw them up on the site as well.

3 years later, these images are still a surreal testament to the severity of this disaster, but also an inspirational reminder of a city that came together to fight through the destruction.

I tried to avoid taking photos of people's personal destruction throughout the neighborhoods that were badly damaged and instead put the camera down to help with the cleanup effort. There are plenty of powerful images around the web though from the cleanup effort that can give you an idea of how bad the individual damages really were.

Hustle III Recap | 03.08.2013 (Video)

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past 6 months, then you've probably caught wind of the HUSTLE parties that have been goin down every couple months at Cannery Ballroom.

Nashville's most dedicated DJs came together once again to bring us third installment of the HUSTLE event; not much I can say about it, just watch the vid and see the craziness for yourself! One of my favorite additions to the production this time around was the stripper pole and light boxes for the dancers! I stand by my previous assertions that this is probably the one of the best parties in Nashville, this crew always goes above and beyond to ensure a kick ass evening for all in attendance!

Bassnectar NYE 2013 Recap (Video)

We are all connected...

Well, our Break On A Cloud produced Bassnectar NYE 2013 Recap video was officially released a few weeks ago; but per usual, I am just now getting around to making a blog post about it, haha. Watch and read below:)

It's really hard to put into words how amazing of an experience it was working on this project from start to finish. We spent a total of 3 full days shooting footage and time-lapses in and around Nashville's Bridgestone Arena and the Downtown Nashville area to document all the hard work that goes in to building a production of this magnitude. On the day of the show, we had a 4-5 person camera crew and 6 cameras capturing every little facet of this spectacular event from every angle possible..the night was a huge success!

Lorin (Bassnectar) absolutely blew the roof off the place that night! Surrounded by some odd 11,000 fans going completely nuts, his setup for the evening incorporated a 360 degree rotating stage setup in the smack dab in the middle of the arena accompanied by some of the most amazing sound and lighting production I have ever witnessed. It was hands down, one of the our most memorable NYE experiences to date! Definitely the craziest show I have ever helped document, even more so than last year's Bassnectar NYE show (which was also insane).

The feedback has been great so far...the video is sitting at around 30k views right now on Bassnectar's YouTube Channel, with a lot of great comments and joyous fans reminiscing about this magical night. It really makes me feel good to know that our work has created a permanent visual memory of this experience that fans can revert to whenever they want to escape back to that time and place. We had such a blast documenting this incredible event and putting these visuals together for everyone to see...can't thank everyone enough for making this such an amazing NYE experience once again!!

Art for Animals 2013 Photo Booth (Photos)

Over this past weekend, I had the extreme pleasure of volunteering my services (in the form of a fun photo booth) at the 6th Annual Art for Animals Fundraiser. The event, held at The Factory in Franklin and hosted by Nashville Paw Magazine, welcomed 500 guests (twice as many as last year!) and raised an incredible $33,000 for our Nashville Paw Foundation to help fund local spay and neuter programs!

I was thrilled to be a part of this hugely successful event and hope to work more with the Nashville Paw Foundation in the future. Huge shoutout to all the sponsors and volunteers involved that made this so enjoyable!

HUSTLE TAKE 2 - The Official Do615 Launch Party Recap (Video)

On December 7, 2012, the minds behind Electric Western, The Boom Bap, Y2K, Whiskey Disco, Recognize, and KEEP ON MOVIN! once again pulled off the biggest dance party in Nashville, but this time even BIGGER!! Teaming up with Do615 (a new website showcasing events around the Ville) for their official launch party, the crew rocked the Cannery Ballroom crowd late into the night!

I have to say, after filming the first HUSTLE party back in October, it was obvious that they stepped their game up on this one...lighting and sound production (provided by LMG) were on point and the crowd was even more amazing! Big ups to everyone involved in this incredible event and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to film it again!

The crowd raging at Bassnectar's Friday night headlining set!

Back in late September, Break On A Cloud sent me down to Fairburn, GA to cover the inaugural CounterPoint Music Festival! The successful 3-day event was produced by C3 Presents, the organizers of Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, and MCP Presents, the organizers of Camp Bisco. They did an excellent job putting this together!

The video below is a collection of clips that I captured during my two day stay (Sept 28-29) at CounterPoint photographing the festival..thanks to everyone that made this such an amazing experience and hope to be there again next year!

Had a stellar time snappin' engagement pics in downtown Nashville with my very good friends Tommy and Alanna. They were in town from Fort Collins, CO for a weekend and we spent a Saturday afternoon kickin' it around Nashville shooting photos. It was so hot that day, but they stuck it out and we got some great shots. Wish I would have had some more time to spend with them, especially in the evening hours; but it was a great experience nonetheless. Very excited to celebrate their marriage this coming January out in Breckenridge, CO!

Laser Flames + The Screemin' Boweevils @ Gilligan's | 04.21.2012

Damn, I really can't say enough good things about these Murfreesboro based bands. You can always expect the highest caliber performance and a great time! Laser Flames on the Great Big News is a "band that plays rock songs for metal heads, country ballads for crust-punks and classic rock for black metal maniacs." Couldn't have said it better myself, they put on an amazing show!

The Screemin' Boweevils, on the other hand (featuring guitarist John Judkins from Laser Flames) are a "raunch country" outfit that truly rocks out the dirty, sometimes beautiful jams and owns their onstage personas right down to the wardrobe. Some of the funniest and most perverted lyrical content I've ever heard. That, mixed with hilarious onstage banter, excellent musicianship and free mustaches makes for some of the most fun times I've ever had at a show!

Wick-it the Instigator | Forecastle Festival 2012 Recap (Video)

What started as a rainy Saturday in Louisville, KY quickly turned to a rager as Nashville's Wick-it the Instigator took the stage as one of the early acts at the year's Forecastle Festival. After a weather delay and rescheduled set time, Wick-it, who has been puttin' in work on a busy Warped Tour schedule this summer, was finally able to get on the decks and do his thing!

The set started off a bit slow with a scant crowd in attendance, but as the bass started thumping under the bridge at the Red Bull Ocean Stage and diffracting throughout the the Forecastle grounds, the party-primed festival goers began to flood in and then it got live!! Wick-it threw down a killer set, the fans partied hard and there was nothing but love and smiling faces in the proverbial "building" that day. I'm def thankful to have had the opportunity to film this set while enjoying my time at Forecastle 2012, it really was a great weekend. Had a blast putting this recap/interview visual together...Thanks for watching!

The Custom Sevier Skirt (Video)

So it probably goes without saying that I may have been a bit out of my element as far as the subject matter of this video goes (being the man's man that I am, haha:). Nonetheless, I learned a great deal about the design and production of a custom garment throughout the making of this video.

My friends over at Sevier Skirts really have this process down to a science and certainly produce a quality product of the highest standard for their customers while providing a unique experience! So in essence, I took a lot more from this project than I expected to insofar as what goes in to being a successful small business and how important it is to provide only the best for your clients. This is something that I think that all of us in the creative business realm can stand to emulate.

Definitely had a good time producing this vid and I thank the employees for allowing me to document the ins and outs of their operation!

Cody + Kelly: A Mexico Wedding | 01.14.2012 (Photos)

Hello::
Even though these pics were taken almost six months ago and have been enjoyed by the bride, groom, friends, family and myself many times over; I had never actually posted them on this blog (which is supposed to showcase my favorite projects, haha). I could go on for days about how bad I am about keeping this site updated at times, but I digress...this post is all about Cody and Kelly Malak (the Groom and Bride respectively)...for those of you not familiar with them, you should know that they are two very near and dear friends of mine. I had shot some engagement pics for them back in October, so I was thrilled when they asked if I would shoot their destination wedding in Zihuatanejo, Mexico this past January, to which I was going regardless. Now, I would have been stoked to shoot their nuptials in any locale, but the fact that this glorious event would be held in one of the most beautiful "little places" on the Pacific coast of Mexico among the company of some of our closest friends, only sweetened the deal. So the plans were made and less than two weeks into the new year, we arrived in this little piece of heaven!

Now to preface...this was the first time I had ever shot pictures for a wedding (I normally do video). It was definitely a whole new ballgame for me as far as my personal role in a wedding day and the different situations I had to account for technique-wise, but I knew that if we approached the whole situation with a laid back and fun attitude, it would without a doubt make for some great images. I mean how could you not be in a great mindset surrounded by all that beauty!? It really is hard to take a bad picture in that amazing environment. Luckily we were blessed with some nice weather that day and an amazing venue, La Perla Restaurant, right on the beach (La Playa Ropa) of the Zihuatanejo Bay. Kelly was a beautiful bride in her stunning dress..they are quite the handsome couple if you asked me; that always makes the job a whole lot easier, haha. The La Perla staff was infinitely accommodating and the fact that the wedding and reception were all being held in the same vicinity made for a very stress free and easy going experience. There was laughter, tears and an all around air of care free bliss that is not likely to be matched anytime soon. All these factors made for a very smooth flowing day and a killer reception party that could only be described as "Raging"; true to form, y'all:)

Needless to say, this was one of the most amazing experiences I have had in recent years. It is rare to be surrounded by so many great friends in such a beautiful location with seemingly endless amounts of love and laughter to go around; not to mention amazing views, food and booze, lol. Plenty of new friendships were created in celebration of this fine couple and bonds were made between families and friends that will last a lifetime...I know I'm not just speaking for my myself when I say that I will cherish these memories for years to come and can only hope for more opportunities like this in the future...It's hard to consider this "work", when it was so much fun to document! We wound up staying in Zihua for a full week, so it was not just a "wedding gig", it was a full on vacation! I sincerely appreciate the Malak and Hudson families for allowing me to be part of this incredible journey!

Bonnaroo 2012 Pre-Post (Thoughts)

Well folks, it's that time of year again...Festival Season!! As I sit here in my work cubicle typing this, I am literally shaking with anticipation of the amazing weekend that is about to unfold. The Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, TN has been a staple of my summers here in Tennessee since 2005; so blessed to have such a killer festival right down the road from Nashville. We aim to outdo ourselves each year, but this may be the best yet!! Cannot wait to throw down with my amazing old and new friends...celebrating music, art, life, humanity and all things WEIRD!!

Here is a list of "firsts" for this year:
1) First time rollin up to Roo in a baller-ass RV trailer! Very stoked about this; I've never minded camping at Roo, but there are def some miserable aspects of it...I think this year's gonna be pretty plush:)

2) First time with media access to film an artist (Mimosa on Thursday night); compliments of my associates over at Break on a Cloud. We are really looking forward to providing some video coverage and hope to make it a yearly thing at future Roo's!!

3) First time that my Birthday (June 8th) falls during the actual festival. In previous years it has always been before the festival (which is still cool), but I can only imagine how crazy and fun it's gonna be this year. I imagine a couple highlights of the night will be Radiohead and the late night Umphrey's Mcgee set!

Needless to say I am extremely elated to be spending yet another year on the farm with all my friends, freaks and amazing talent!!

I Like it Raw: Live Footage from araabMUZIK and Purity Ring (Video)

I've been trying to get in the habit of capturing raw video of at least a few songs when I'm out shooting photography for bands with Break on a Cloud...usually just throw on my trusty Rode Videomic and let it roll and then edit the clips together in post. I've found that these vids often generate more hits on YouTube than a lot of the recaps that I've done...people really appreciate live HD footage with bearable sound quality, so I'll def keep up on this habit. Also will be doing a lot more live multicam shoots with my team in the coming months; incorporating live soundboard syncs is obviously the preferable approach to:)

1. The first vid above is of araabMUZIK completely destroying it at Mercy Lounge during his recent visit to Nashville on the Living Dead tour supporting Omar Linx and ZEDS DEAD. This dude is the MVP of the MPC, true talent in the electronic game!

2. Second vid was def a pleasant surprise..was at Mercy Lounge to film Neon Indian and Purity Ring was opening up for them. I had listened to a couple of their tracks (they only had three recorded:) before the show so decided to let the camera roll thru the whole set..this is a 4 song highlight from their set Songs include "Fineshrine", "Ungirthed" and 2 other "unreleased" tracks. Be on the lookout for their album dropping 07.24.2012!!

Myquel Haddox: Headstand Nut Gap (Video)

As promised, here is a fun little edit I'm droppin to celebrate 400 likes on my facebook page! Many thanks to all my new and existing fans for your continued support!!

Some might remember me posting this still image on facebook a while back..now you can finally watch the video and see that it was for real:)!!

Filmed this footage almost a year ago in the Boro one sunday; finally got around to putting together an edit for it...

The skater in the video is local Murfreesboro, TN badass, Myquel Haddox...mad talent! This kid crushes it and I wish I would have gotten more footage of him that day; but I digress...

After watching Quel ollie over fire hydrants and 6ft gaps all afternoon, we decided it was time up the ante! Conjuring what little bit of gymnastic talent in my possession, I proposed that he ollie over me while doing a spread eagle headstand, a challenge which he gladly accepted..anything to better the film, right?? haha, after a couple failed attempts (no injuries incurred), he executed the jump flawlessly! pretty intense.

Quel is a "trained professional" and I totally trusted him to clear the "gap". Do NOT attempt to re-create this stunt at home or school...NO BALLSACKS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO!! haha, peace

I would really like to do some more projects like this in the future so stay tuned!

Woody + Megg: The Proposal (Zihuatanejo, Mexico) | 01.16.2012

Hello::

Just 2 short days after I witnessed and documented two of my great friends say their vows on the beautiful beaches of La Playa Ropa (Zihuatanejo, Mexico), I got to witness another best friend and homeboy for life (Daniel Woodard) propose to his wonderful girl (Meggan) on that same beach!! It was a very exciting and emotional experience for all in attendance, and I am honored that Woodard asked me to document the occasion and capture these memories for them!

Daniel had come to me a few weeks earlier, telling me of his plans to pop the question while we were in Mexico and asked if we could somehow capture the moment. I suggested that we stage a "fake" portrait session for all of our friends on the beach at sunset, making it seem like a group activity so as not to arouse suspicion from Meggan at the presence of all my photo gear setup:) When it was Woodard and Meggan's turn to get their picture taken, he would get down on one knee and say those magic words! Needless to say, the plan went off without a hitch and I was able to capture the whole event basically frame by frame. It was such a great moment and we celebrated accordingly that evening!:)

Video (Update and Notes): The Ambassador Program at Bassnectar NYE Nashville 2012

Hello::
It is amazing to me that we're already 8 days into March 2012..man, how the time flies. It's also crazy that I haven't made a post on here since January (2 months)!! Embarrassing as it may be, it is in no reason due to lack of working projects; quite the contrary in fact...these first 2 months of 2012 have brought with them some amazing opportunities and experiences...from the aforementioned Bassnectar NYE video coverage to my Mexico journey and wedding shoot for two of my great friends, to shooting amazing shows pretty much on a weekly basis with my cohorts over at Break On a Cloud here in Nashville...2012 is shaping up to be an exciting and extremely busy year! Unfortunately, I've been a bit overwhelmed with all the work I have piling up lately, so haven't really had any chance to post on here, but I am sorting my way through everything and will be recapping all the activities here in the coming weeks. You probably already know what's up though if you follow me on facebook!

First order of business:

Here is "The Ambassador Program at Bassnectar NYE Nashville 2012" documentary that we (the Break On A Cloud team) put together to highlight the Ambassador activities at Bassnectar's NYE 2012 performance at the Bridgestone Arena here in Nashville. It was the biggest party in town and one of the most amazing experiences of my life! Here is the skinny from Rob over at Breakonacloud.com:

Wedding Highlight: Adam + Lane Booten | 10.15.2011

Hello::...and Happy Friday!

We had the pleasure of filming Lane and Adam's Murfreesboro Wedding at Lane's parents' house back in October. It was a beautiful location and an incredible day full of love, laughter and friendship. They are an excellent couple with a very caring and supportive "team" of family and friends surrounding them! Needless to say, I had a very enjoyable time documenting them tying the knot and recapping the killer party that ensued!! Check out the highlight vid below:

Wedding Highlight: Jay + Jennifer Derwin | 09.24.2011

We filmed Jay and Jennifer's Nashville wedding at Houston Station back in September and couldn't have had a better time documenting their special day! They are a super friendly and vibrant couple surrounded by very fun and supportive friends and family. Cool venue, great wedding and killer reception party!!

Halloween Night Recap:)

Hello::
Well, it was another excellent Halloween night with a great crew this past week! Decided to set up the makeshift photobooth (see pics below) at the crib once again to capture some of the pregame madness before we headed out to one of the most epic Pretty Lights performances I've seen to date!!

Pretty Lights threw it down hard to a sold out crowd at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville!! was def quite an experience!! Here's a couple vids I found floatin around youtube:
